5 Things We Love About Maine Winters

As the weather gets colder and temperatures drop, Mainers prepare for what is both the best and the worst season of the year. Even though the snow can sometimes be a pain, there is so much to love about our famous Maine winters. Here are five reasons to look forward to the cold season, and yes…one of them is alpaca.

  • The snow. Unless it’s week-old, dirty snow pushed into a massive pile at the Maine Mall (and even that’s a pretty cool sight…) or the little hill surrounding your mailbox that your dog has claimed, snow is beautiful. Whether it’s forming crystals on the naked tree branches or lightly dusting your front porch, driveway and yard, a fresh coat of snow makes everything look almost otherworldly. Even though it means the temperature is below 32 degrees (and often more like 10 degrees if we’re being honest), the snow is what makes winter, well, winter. And it’s gorgeous.
  • The sports. Well, this kind of goes hand in hand with the snow, but winter sports deserve their own category. There are so many fun things to do once the snow falls, and not just your obvious skiing and snowboarding. Snowshoeing and ice-fishing are great activities as long as you have the right apparel on (more on that in a minute), as are cross-country skiing and the more extreme winter sports like snowmobiling. All of these fun activities get your blood pumping and provide a great adrenaline rush.
  • Alpacawear! There is always an occasion for alpacawear in the winter, and that’s one of the reasons we love it so much! DSC00847Whether you’re lounging at home or out doing one of the aforementioned activities, you’ll want to be sporting the finest alpaca products to make sure you’re comfortable, warm and stylish. Choose a cozy sweater or blanket to curl up with, and don’t leave home without a fuzzy scarf, hat and mittens to block the chill. So quick – stock up on all your alpaca needs for the winter so that you can be prepared before the first accumulation.
  • Warm drinks. Whether it’s mulled cider, tea, hot chocolate, hot chocolate with Bailey’s, or peppermint mochas, winter is truly the best season for beverages. Not that you couldn’t have these types of drinks throughout the rest of the year, but there’s something about sipping from a mug, filled to the brim with hot cocoa, marshmallows and a candy cane, in front of your fireplace (or spaceheater) in a nice pair of flannel pajamas that makes winter amazing.
  • Food. Okay, so food is good no matter what time of year it is, but from October to January, things are in high gear. It usually starts with Halloween. It’s all candy all the time for about two weeks. Then, of course, comes Thanksgiving – need I say more? And the entire month of December is full of Thanksgiving leftovers combined with an abundance of holiday-themed meals at work, at home, at parties and gatherings. Then comes January and New Year’s Resolutions. But, there are still so many leftovers from the holidays that January ends up being full of delicious food, too. And let’s be honest, is there really anything better than a big, home-cooked meal while the snow is falling outside your window?
